— Manila Bulletin:
Games Sunday (The Arena, San Juan)
2 p.m. – UP vs Cagayan
4 p.m. – Ateneo vs National U
PLDT Home Telpad survived Air Force’s repeated rallies in the last two sets to eke out a 25-15, 26-24, 25-22 victory and prime itself up for the quarterfinal grind in the Shakey’s V-League Season II Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan yesterday.
After playing backup to former MVP Suzanne Roces for most of the elims, Gretchel Soltones took the lead role this time, blasting the Raiders with 18 kills to finish with 19 hits.
Laurence Ann Latigay complemented Soltones’ power game on the other side with a 13-attack performance while Roces turned in a steady game of 15 hits, including two blocks.
After an opening set cruise, the Turbo Chargers found the going tough in the second frame, needing an extra point to thwart the stubborn Raiders then held on in the third to complete the sweep in one-hour and 20 minutes.
The league’s newcomers thus closed out their elims campaign with an impressive 6-1 record, losing only to unbeaten Army. They, however, hope to further raise the level of their game in the next phase with ace hitter Dindin Santiago expected to join the team.
Air Force dropped to 3-3. But it hopes to bounce back against National U at the close of its elims campaign next Tuesday and boost its record heading to the carry-over quarterfinal phase of the mid-season conference of the league sponsored by Shakey’s and backed by Mikasa and Accel.
Maika Ortiz and Joy Cases combined for 24 hits but the rest failed to step up with Iari Yong settling for seven markers, Judy Caballejo adding four points and Jennifer Manzano and Liza Deramos chipping in three hits apiece.
The Turbo Boosters also pounced on their rivals’ poor reception, scoring seven service aces, including two each from Charo Soriano and setter Rubie de Leon, who also produced 25 excellent sets. Soriano and de Leon wound up with four hits apiece while Ryzabelle Devanadera had three points and Des Patilano added one hit.
Air Force loss also put to naught Rhea Dimaculangan’s solid 29-excellent set effort as the Raiders could only come with 38 kills as against PLDT’s 46.
Meanwhile, the PLDT-Air Force duel, and the Army-Cagayan Valley face-off, being played at presstime, will be shown on GMA News TV starting at 1 p.m. today.
