MANNY Pacquiao’s long time trainer Freddie Roach is expected to arrive in late August to early September in the Philippines to start the training of the reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion for his fight against Chris Algieri.

Pacquiao, 35, who holds 56-5-2 win-loss-draw record with 38 knockouts, will defend his belt against the undefeated WBO American junior welterweight titleholder on November 22, at the Cotai Arena in Venetian Hotel Macau, China.

“I think Roach will come to our country late August or early September to start Manny’s training here in Manila,” Pacquiao’s business manager Eric Pineda told The Manila Times on Wednesday.

“We really wanted the training to be more convenient this time.”

Roach earlier belittled the boxing ability of the 30-year-old Algieri (20-0 record with eight knockouts), saying that his “jab” and running would only be the younger boxer’s main weapons when the fight night comes.

“His style, he’s a bit of a runner. Pacquiao doesn’t particularly like fighting guys who run so much. We’ll figure out a way to beat him. It’s not a problem,” Roach told Scott Christ of Badlefthook.com. “He’s got a good jab. That’s it.”

Pineda, meanwhile, confirmed that the construction of multi-million-peso basketball and boxing training facility in Azure condominium in Bicutan, Taguig City, is meant to accomodate Pacquiao’s practice sessions. Besides his preoccupation with boxing, Pacquiao also intends to be the playing coach of the KIA squad in the Philippine Basketball Association’s 40th season. KIA Motors is expected to draw Pacquiao as their 11th pick overall in the draft night.

“That’s the purpose of that venue to put Pacquiao’s boxing and basketball training and practice session in one roof,” Pineda said. “With this, Manny could easily oversee the training of his basketball team while he’s preparing for his fight.”

“We don’t want to travel that much and around September or October the sports venue will be operational by then,” he added. “Everybody is excited to train with him [Pacquiao].”
